WHAT: 10 Factors Influencing the Treatment of Chronic Pain

The American Pain Society estimates that nine percent of the U.S. adult population suffers from moderate to severe, non-cancer related chronic pain, costing more than $150 billion annually in health care, disability and related expenses, and a half million lost workdays. Chronic pain can affect nearly all of a patient’s body systems leading to more complications, longer recovery time, prolonged pain medication usage, and a higher risk of prescription drug misuse or abuse. As a result, costs can rapidly escalate. This presentation will discuss 10 key factors to look for in chronic pain claims and how each affects a claim – from what to look for, to what tools to employ, and the essential requirements that make a multidisciplinary approach successful. With this information, attendees will increase their awareness of the warning signs of potential misuse and abuse, understand the risks associated with opioid analgesics, and learn the right clinical resources to intervene and proactively manage the risks of chronic pain claims. Knowing where a claim can spiral out of control and which best practices can deliver the best results can help manage the risks and keep the patient on the road to recovery.
